Old Cahawba Archaeological Park

I love microadventures.  It allows me to have a little getaway without a plane ride or using any vacation time.  Earlier this fall, Brad & I decided to have a little microadventure by taking a day trip down to Old Cahawba Archaeological Park in Orrville, AL.  I hadn't heard of this little park until about a year ago when I saw a beautifully haunting black & white photo of it on my Instagram feed.  I knew I needed to check it out one day.

Old Cahawba was Alabama's first capital from 1819 - 1826.  Nestled on the banks of the Cahaba River, this little ghost town is full of history.  I loved that there were informational pamphlets across the park that allow you to host your own walking tour, complete with stories of some of the former residents.  I'm sure a lot of the stories were tall tales, but that's really the only way I can find interest in history!

You can easily spend a day here wandering through the grounds.  It'd be great to bring your bicycle & bike through the grounds & hike a few of the nature trails around the park.

I fell in love with all of the beautiful Spanish moss draped all over the trees!

The park is open daily 9 am - 5 pm.  Admission is $2 & I highly recommend you bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while overlooking the beautiful Cahaba.  For more information, see the park website.

What's one of your favorite local adventure spots?
